The Bishop + Ivy team will, quite literally, travel to the ends of the Earth if it means finding inspiration for our work. There are so many amazing styles, materials, designers, and more all over the world who we find inspiring. And as much as we love our local community and the architects and designers in it, sometimes it’s nice to see what other regions have to offer!

From left to right: Ari; a friend of Bishop + Ivy, Franny; and Steph in Denmark!

Earlier in the summer, Stephané and Arianna were joined by a friend on a week-long trip to Denmark and Norway. Arianna received a grant from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) – specifically the Dallas chapter – to study Viking architecture in the Scandinavian countries. She took Stephané with her for an unforgettable adventure.

You can read more about their time here on the Architecture and Design Exchange (AD EX) website, but we have some highlights:

  • Steph and Ari traveled through Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, to study how their styles of architecture and design differ from those here in America
  • They visited museums, historical churches, and iconic buildings to draw inspiration from Euro-style influences
  • They learned about Viking history and architecture, and how ancient ideas might still apply today – especially in the way of centering “Hygge” and using natural materials
  • Ari tried eating whale (no further context needed)

The team came away from the trip with more knowledge of architecture and design of several kinds. They came back feeling invigorated to try improving their own work with those Danish and Norwegian influences. And they returned as more well-rounded professionals.

It just goes to show that inspiration is everywhere, and you just have to go find it! For more on the trip to Denmark and Norway, check out our Instagram!
